Reaching maximum affinity with them unlocks a special perk that will boost the player's performance. All of them except for Dogmeat will react to the player's decisions with either approval or disapproval. Waiting multiple days and returning lets me speak to him again, but only to offer him a job, same as before, and can still send him to the place I did last time, meaning that he just didn't get set as a settler there in the first place.
